Lutz Optometrist Talks about Ortho K Treatment

Wouldn't it be great to be able to get rid of your eyeglasses without having to undergo eye surgery? With orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, you can. With Ortho-K, our Tampa optometrist will fit your eyes with special contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape your eyes, temporarily correcting the misshapen part that causes you to need vision correction. It doesn't last forever, but you'll see clearly for at least a full day afterward.

Are you wondering if Ortho-K treatments can help your vision? Our Lutz optometrist explains some facts about Ortho-K and how it can could help you.

How Can Ortho-K from My Optometrist in Lutz Help my Vision?

Ortho-K lenses are used mainly for two different purposes: to correct poor vision in the eye, mainly nearsightedness, and sometimes astigmatism or hyperopia, and to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. These lenses actually reshape your corneas overnight, correcting your vision well enough that you probably won't need to use eyeglasses the next day. You should be able to see well enough to avoid glasses for a day or two, although we advise you to wear your Ortho K lenses every night while you sleep.

Who is a Candidate for Ortho-K?

Most people with mild to moderate nearsightedness will do will with orthokeratology, as well as those with mild to moderate astigmatism. It works well for children and teens who want to be glasses-free but who are too young for LASIK or refractive surgery. People who could otherwise wear contact lenses but who can't because of their jobs or hobbies (construction workers, football players, etc.) do especially well using Ortho K to correct their eye problems.

What to Expect With Ortho-K Therapy

When you come to our office to get Ortho K lenses, our Tampa eye doctor will measure the size and curvature of your eye. This painless procedure only takes about a minute. You'll probably need to use a series of progressively stronger lenses to achieve the results you want. We always aim for 20/20 eyes, but in many cases, 20/40 is the outcome. Most people need a series of at least three different lenses before reaching their final prescription. In the beginning, you'll notice your contact lenses in your eyes as you fall asleep. Like any other type of lenses, though, you'll gradually get used to them and won't notice them any more at bedtime. Some people have excellent vision after just one or two days, but in some cases it can take up to two weeks before seeing great results.
